I was searching the Internet for something about Eminem and found this article about how his music helped Ed Sheeran overcome his stutter. It reminded me of one of my students who had a stutter. She was 20 something at the time. Once, we went to a class field trip to another city. On our way back, some of the students started playing antakshari to kill time on the 8 hour long drive back. Antakshari is a game played in South-Asian countries where each contestant sings the first verse of a song (mostly movie songs) that begins with the local language consonant on which the previous contestant’s song selection ended. Most of the students got tired after an hour or two but there were some who went on playing the game for hours (annoying the life out of those who were trying to sleep :))! The student with a stutter was the most active participant. She just didn’t stop. The songs kept coming as if from a radio station – one after the other, without a break. And she sang them with all her heart without missing a single beat or word.. and her stutter disappeared completely! It was amazing to witness this and see her shine. It’s been over 8 years since that trip and now she’s an accomplished professional.

Apparently, there are music therapy interventions for people who want to overcome their stutter. It is amazing how music can help people overcome various obstacles in their lives.
